I usually buy larger spools of thread like the ones shown below. They are a better value. You can buy these at most quilt shops.

I often use the spool on the bottom left for my patchwork. It is a neutral color and works well with most of my fabrics. If I am sewing a pastel quilt, I use a lighter neutral shade or the beige spool on the right. When machine quilting, I sometimes use a color that compliments the quilt's top or backing.
