Darning foot

Most sewing machines come with a darning foot. This attachment may be made from plastic or metal. The foot may be shaped as an open circle, square or rectangle. The size of the opening varies. 

Below is a darning foot for a Bernina sewing machine. It is metal and has a partial open circle at the bottom of the foot.
