Straight pins

I wish I could show you the difference in the pin shafts below but I just can't get a good photo. I guess you'll have to take my word for it. The glass head silk pins are much thinner than other pins. This makes it easy to stick the pin into the fabric. There is also less distortion when using glass head pins.
